Residents, commuters, and businesses in District 4 should be aware of significant upcoming traffic impacts related to the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) I-30 Canyon Corridor Improvement Project.
Full I-30 Closure (Eastbound & Westbound)
Weather permitting, all lanes of I-30 will be closed between I-35E and I-45/US 75 beginning 10:00 p.m. Friday, January 16 through 5:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2026. This temporary closure is necessary to advance critical construction activities as part of the long-term corridor improvements
Detours & Travel Impacts
-
A signed detour will route traffic to SH 366 (Woodall Rodgers Freeway) as an alternate east–west connection.
-
Significant delays are expected. Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel in the area and plan for extra travel time.
-
TxDOT has indicated that another similar weekend closure may occur later this month, with details to follow
Long-Term Street Closures & Lane Reductions
As part of this same project, several downtown streets will experience extended closures and lane reductions:
-
Cesar Chavez Boulevard: Fully closed at I-30 beginning January 12, 2026, through late 2028
-
Cadiz Street: Fully closed at I-30 starting January 13, 2026, to be rebuilt on a new alignment
-
Akard Street: Fully closed at I-30 from January 13, 2026, through summer 2028
-
Good Latimer Expressway: Reduced to one lane in each direction through early 2028
🚫 No pedestrian access will be allowed within the closed work zones. Signed detours will be posted for all affected streets.
About the Project The $888 million I-30 Canyon Project spans between the I-35E and I-45 interchanges and is expected to be completed by late 2030, weather permitting. The project aims to improve safety, mobility, and long-term infrastructure in the downtown Dallas corridor.
Stay Informed & Stay Safe Residents are encouraged to check DriveTexas.org for the latest construction updates and lane closure information. TxDOT also reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and remain alert in work zones to keep both motorists and crews safe.
We appreciate the community’s patience as this important infrastructure investment moves forward.
