Readout of Mayor Johnson’s official visit to Zanzibar, Tanzania
Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson arrived in Zanzibar, Tanzania, on the morning of Saturday, July 19. Mayor Johnson spent the day with the Honorable Mahmoud Muhammed Mussa, Lord Mayor of Zanzibar City, and Dr. Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage. Dr. Jumbe and Lord Mayor Mussa planned a comprehensive agenda for the day, highlighting the rich history, vibrant culture, thriving tourism, and dynamic economy of Zanzibar Island, also called Unguja.
As part of this agenda, Mayor Johnson visited Stone Town with Dr. Jumbe and Lord Mayor Mussa. Known as the heart of Zanzibar, Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a commercial and cultural hub known for centuries as a center of spice trade, particularly in cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Alongside Dr. Jumbe and Lord Mayor Mussa, Mayor Johnson toured one of Zanzibar’s renowned spice farms. Often referred to as the “Spice Island,” Zanzibar has built a centuries-old legacy around the cultivation and global trade of spices. These farms, ranging from small family-owned plots to large-scale commercial enterprises, remain a vital pillar of the region’s economy and a compelling area of trade collaboration.
On the morning of Sunday, July 20, Mayor Johnson met with the Honorable Zubeir Ali Maulid, Speaker of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
During his time with Lord Mayor Mussa, Dr. Jumbe, and the Honorable Zubeir Ali Maulid, Mayor Johnson discussed trade and economic development. He highlighted Dallas as a strategic partner as the headquarters of the Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Johnson also promoted Dallas as a rising economic powerhouse, the heart of one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the United States, strategically located at the center of the country and the continent, and home to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport offering convenient passenger and cargo flights across North America.
Mayor Johnson departed Zanzibar on Sunday continuing his official visit to Tanzania with a stop in Dar es Salaam.
