Dallas Zoning Reform Public Meetings’ Series

DALLAS - The City of Dallas is updating the Dallas Development Code to create a set of rules that are simple, clear and future ready. To kick-off the public engagement process, a citywide series of public meetings will take place this June to engage residents, business owners, and neighborhood leaders in the Dallas Zoning Reform effort—an initiative led by the Planning & Development Department, with assistance from national consultants at Camiros.

The Dallas Zoning Reform effort is a city initiative to modernize the Dallas Development Code, last comprehensively updated in 1965. With the support of local partners, the City of Dallas is working to ensure this process is transparent, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all Dallas residents.

Zoning controls how our city develops by regulating land use, building placement and bulk/size, parking requirements, landscaping standards, sign regulations, and numerous other aspects of the built environment. These rules collectively determine how cities like Dallas can grow and evolve, directly shaping the physical character of our community and impacting everything from housing availability and transportation patterns to economic development and environmental sustainability

“Over the years, with numerous small changes here and there, our development code has become very complicated. We are seeing how it affects development with each zoning case and new Planned Developemnt District we create. The Dallas Zoning Reform will help us establish a Development Code that is simple, clear and future ready,” said Dr. Andreea Udrea, Deputy Director of Planning & Development. “As we update our Development Code, we're not just revising regulations—we're reimagining the way our city functions. This reform is about aligning our zoning framework with the vision and values of our adopted polices, removing unnecessary regulatory hurdles and providing clarity and predictability.”

Community meetings will be held throughout the city in June, with sessions designed to explain initial approaches to zoning reform in Dallas, gather community input, and empower residents to make meaningful contributions as the process continues.
