Black History Month Celebration: Social Inequities and Mental Wellbeing in the Black Community

DALLAS – On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the City of Dallas Office of Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with Dallas County and Metrocare Services, hosted a Black History Month Celebration that explored structural barriers and mental wellbeing in the Black community.

The event engaged the community in intentional dialogue about the importance of individual and community mental health. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from policymakers and mental healthcare providers, while gaining access to essential resources and self-care practices.

"Partnerships like the one between the City of Dallas and Dallas County are paramount in shifting structures and increasing access points to address racial inequities." said Dr. Lindsey Wilson, Director of City of Dallas Office of Equity & Inclusion.

In response to Dallas County's unanimous resolution in June 2020, recognizing racism as a public health crisis, significant strides have been taken to address its impact.

“Dallas County leadership remains committed to advancing and supporting efforts to address historic inequities that continue to afflict too many members of our community.” stated Jheison Romain, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer for Dallas County Office of Equity and Inclusion.

Metrocare Services, the largest provider of mental health and developmental disability services in Dallas County, highlights on their website that 1 in 5 of people experience a mental health challenge. Metrocare offers tailored services to adults, children, teens, veterans & military families, and individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.
