Oak Cliff native Saxon Martinez explores his identity through the lens of social constructs focusing on expectations and perceptions of family, culture, memory, and violence. Using the piñata’s “celebratory and destructive history”, Martinez constructs narratives that go beyond preconceived expectations of ethnicity resulting in works that are once familiar and enigmatic.
Growing up, piñatas were a fixture in much of Martinez’ life. In Memoires their distinctive features of overlapping fringed paper framed with cardboard surround “speak to the vibrancy and temporality of Martinez’ memories”. As wall mounted objects, the works reference intimate moments like photographs of family and the self, carrying a sense of “home and ambiguity”. These “physical manifestations of self-portraiture” are Martinez’ reflections on how experiences of labor, violence, trauma, social injustice and memory influence his identity.
Saxon Martinez has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. His work has been included in exhibitions in Texas, Colorado, and most recently in Fermont, California at Sequoia University. He is a recipient of the Greater Denton Arts council Micro Grant and was awarded a Juror Choice Award for his work in the 500X Gallery EXPO 2022 exhibition. His work has been featured in Glasstire’s Top Five in 2022 and in Under the Bridge Magazine. A native of Oak Cliff – Dallas, Texas, Saxon currently lives and works in Colorado.

BELONG DISABILITY MINISTRY ART CLASS

Belong Disability Ministry host an art class at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. Explore various art techniques like painting, drawing, printmaking and collage while using a variety of materials including paint, inks, paper and textiles to create original art on stretched canvas to display or give to a friend. The class is open to students with disabilities 16 and up.

FEBRUARY FILM SERIES AT SPACY
Spacy in collaboration with Oak Cliff Cultural Center, "In Focus: Bill Gunn" is set to showcase three of the late filmmaker's most celebrated works: Personal Problems, Ganja & Hess, and Losing Ground. The series aims to introduce audiences to Gunn's unique vision and contributions to cinema, which have been largely overlooked in mainstream film history.
Personal Problems is a groundbreaking experimental drama that explores the lives of a group of Black middle-class New Yorkers in the 1980s. Shot on video and featuring a largely non-professional cast, the film is a raw and intimate portrait of everyday life, relationships, and struggles. Ganja & Hess, on the other hand, is a horror film that subverts genre conventions and tackles complex themes of addiction, spirituality, and Black identity. Finally, Losing Ground is a poignant drama about a Black academic couple and their marital and artistic crises. The film was Gunn's only theatrical release during his lifetime and is now considered a classic of independent cinema.
Through this film series, audiences will have the opportunity to discover or revisit Gunn's work and appreciate his unique voice and vision. The series also aims to shed light on the challenges that Black filmmakers have faced in the industry and the importance of supporting and promoting diverse voices in cinema.

House/Soul Singer-Songwriter Kali Marz is serving up sweet ear candy at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center celebrating the release of their latest soulful electronic release, “Love Is (CosmiqSugga Elxr)”. This will be the first single leading up to the release of their full-length concept project, "Nzinga’s Disco” A funky, soulful, futuristic & mystical electronic house opera.
Love is (CosmiqSugga Elxr) will be the dance anthem that heralds the arrival of the Kali's new era!

A HISTORICAL & AFROFUTURIST CREATIVE EXPERIENCE
FOR CULTURE-MAKERS IN DFW

Join us at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center for an afternoon for the culture featuring live music, an artist talkback, and a private screening of short film documentary “For They Endured” by multi-disciplinary artist and National Endowment for the Arts subgrantee Kamica King, MA, MT-BC.
For They Endured highlights the history & contributions of Black women in the field of music therapy before, during, and after the civil rights movement- providing important insights into their enduring legacy. This event is supported in part by the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture & King Creative Arts Expressions.

SPRING BREAK ART CAMP WITH CAROLYN MARCO
MARCH 11-15, 2024, 9AM-12PM
In this workshop, participants (ages 9-12) will create wearable art, spending a day each to focus on different materials or techniques. For example - fabric design, leather working, jewelry making, unusual materials, etc. All materials will be provided.
Carolyn is a Richardson based multidisciplinary maker, and educator, passionate about repurposing materials in surprising and impactful ways. Her workshops are focused around not only reducing waste but inspiring others to see possibilities in everyday materials. Former Creative Director and Jewelry Designer for Fossil, Carolyn traded the corporate world to focus on creative experiences. When she isn't hosting Kiki Knows Art workshops, she facilitates Maker Programs at The Perot Museum of Nature and Science and guides families in the creative process during Open Studio at the Dallas Museum of Art.
Camp Dates: March 11 - 15, 2024, 9am-12pm (drop off is at 8:45a and pick up is at 12:30p)
