City statements regarding conviction and sentencing of former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger

City Manager T.C. Broadnax and Police Chief U Renee Hall released the following statements regarding former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger.

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax:

Over the past year, we have all mourned this tragedy, and we continue to pray for the Jean family, and everyone impacted by the death of Botham Jean.

Dallas’ strength as a community lies in our ability to unite in the face of adversity. We are better when we work together. Today, more than ever, we must bridge the gaps that currently divide us as a community and law enforcement.

I know the men and women of the Dallas Police Department are committed and dedicated to the safety of the residents of this great City, and I look forward to working with Chief Hall to support her efforts to strengthen existing partnerships and establishing new ones.

To that end, we must continue to reexamine our policies and procedures across our organization to ensure they are aligned with our core values of ethics, empathy, equity, and excellence.

I am encouraged about the progress we've made, but realize we still have more work to do.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall:

This has been a difficult year for everyone involved. Our city and two families are forever impacted. I continue to pray for the families impacted by this tragic event. We can all agree that Dallas today is different than it was yesterday.

There were things revealed during this trial that gave me pause. What you saw and heard was disheartening, and I can only imagine the community’s perception of law enforcement in the city of Dallas and across this country.

What I can say is that this is not reflective of the Dallas Police Department. Our officers show up every day with integrity, professionalism and dedication to protecting the residents of this community.

I am fully committed to leading this Department and continuing efforts to build trust in the community we serve. I acknowledge that there are areas of concern and I pledge to address them.

Changing the perception of law enforcement starts with us. We must double our efforts to continue to build trust and ensure that our community partnerships are stronger. I want to thank the groups that we have been working with over the past years before the trial and during the trial.

We cannot do this alone. We must come together, not only to heal, but also to work hand in hand so that Dallas becomes a model safe city for the rest of our country to follow.
