City of Dallas Paints the Town Purple

(DALLAS, Texas) – Nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner per minute in the United States. In honor of National Domestic Violence Month in October, the City of Dallas is preparing for several events to raise awareness. Paint the Town Purple is the awareness movement hosted by the City of Dallas’ Domestic Violence Taskforce during October.

The Taskforce has created a Calendar of Events for the public to raise awareness of domestic violence and resources available to victims. The Task Force is asking citizens to “Paint The Town Purple” as a way to come together as a community to help end domestic violence in Dallas. Citizens can showcase support by wearing a purple ribbon on their lapel for the month of October, wearing purple to work or painting one fingernail purple.

At home residents can show solidarity to survivors of domestic violence by tying a purple ribbon around a tree or front door. There is a list below with details on where the public can pick up a complimentary purple ribbon at one of thirty convenient locations throughout Dallas, while supplies last.

Visit Dallas Love Field Airport’s Art Gallery and Dallas City Hall Lobby to view the Clothesline project. The clothesline project allows each of us to bear witness to the violence taking place in our community as shirts created by survivors from local Dallas shelters hang on clotheslines. The goal of this project is to heal and to educate while honoring survivors and memorializing victims.

More information regarding the City’s initiatives and resources may be found on Twitter (@DallasDVTF), Facebook (Dallas Domestic Violence Awareness Month) or Instagram (@dallasdvtf). Be sure to use the hashtags: #PaintBigDPurple and #BigDEndsDV. With your support and engagement, we will end domestic violence in Dallas.
