UPMC Provides $10 Million in Support of Pittsburgh Fleet
Pittsburgh, PA – Amid concerns of operating with an aging fleet and equipment, Mayor Corey O’Connor has announced that UPMC has provided a transformative $10 million contribution to expedite the replacement of Pittsburgh’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles and equipment.
This generous contribution will allow EMS to immediately purchase nine new ambulances and one rescue truck in 2026 and a similar amount of equipment in 2027. The purchase of vehicles and equipment will be done in phases to stagger the maintenance and lifetime of the vehicles.
“The very first EMS started here in Pittsburgh, but for years we’ve been expecting our critical first responders to deliver life-saving services with an old, unreliable fleet,” said Mayor Corey O’Connor. “UPMC saw what was happening, approached us and stepped up to partner with us on this game-changing investment. Their leadership sets the tone for what it means to invest in the well-being of our residents.”
“As the region’s leading health care provider, UPMC is proud to step forward and support the City’s EMS system, which plays a vital role in caring for patients,” said Leslie C. Davis, President and CEO of UPMC. “Strong emergency response infrastructure is essential to a healthy community. We hope this contribution encourages other nonprofit institutions and private-sector partners to join us in supporting the City’s critical needs.”
As the City has been working to invest in a new fleet across city departments, this donation allows the amount budgeted for EMS equipment to be redirected to immediately purchase 35 new vehicles for the Department of Public Works.
“This is an incredible gift from our partners at UPMC, who share our mission to provide the best medical care to our communities,” said EMS Chief Amera Gilcrist.
“EMS would like to thank UPMC for this investment in our bureau and our fleet,” said FAPP president John Atkinson. “This will allow our teams to have access to safe, reliable transportation while providing advance life support.”
“We are so grateful to UPMC for this investment in EMS, which will allow the City to invest in additional DPW vehicles,” said DPW Acting Director John McClory.
This generous contribution at a critical time for the City is in addition to UPMC’s willingness to provide future support as part of a broader coalition effort, reflecting its mission-driven approach to advancing health and supporting the communities it serves.
