CITY OF PITTSBURGH, MAYOR ED GAINEY, AND THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY UNVEILS NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE MEDIC STATION 4 ON THE NORTHSIDE
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Mayor Ed Gainey joined members of the Department of Public Works, the Department of Public Safety, Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS leadership, City Council, and community stakeholders to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of Medic Station 4 in the Northside. The new station replaces an early 20th-century building that once served as a firehouse and had long since outlived its useful life.
“This building represents the very best of what we’re working towards with our City-owned facilities,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “It’s a symbol of how we take care of our people, the first responders who show up for us every day, and the residents they serve. With this project, we’re investing in public safety, sustainability, and neighborhood pride, all at once.”
The deteriorating structure at 213 Lafayette Avenue was demolished and reusable materials were salvaged, where possible. The new station, designed to blend with the surrounding community, is the first City-owned facility built to High Performance Building Standards, emphasizing sustainability, operational efficiency, and improved indoor comfort. It is “Net Zero Ready,” aligning with the City’s Facilities Improvement Master Plan and broader goals around climate resilience and infrastructure renewal.
Planning and design for the project began in September 2020, with construction breaking ground in February 2024. The building enhances emergency response capabilities while minimizing environmental impact, supporting both City workers and residents for decades to come.
City departments and partners who made the project possible include:
- Mayor’s Office, Office of Management & Budget, and City Council
- Department of Public Works leadership, maintenance staff, and design review team
-
Design and construction teams, including:
- AE7 Pittsburgh and Manns Woodward Architects
- Auros Group (Net Zero consulting)
- Larson Design Group (construction management)
- Caliber Contracting (general contractor)
- Sargent Electric, East West Manufacturing & Supply, and Wheels Mechanical
“Our public facilities touch every part of city government,” said Public Works Assistant Director Chip Gaul. “Projects like this show what’s possible when we approach infrastructure with care, vision, and collaboration.”
Medic 4 is a lasting investment in the health, safety, and strength of Pittsburgh and is part of the City’s broader strategy to address aging infrastructure, meet climate goals, and ensure municipal buildings reflect the communities needs now and into the future.
"The newly revamped Medic 4 station is a testament to Mayor Ed Gainey's commitment to creating safe, accessible, and sustainable structures that support the work of first responders while expanding the capabilities of Pittsburgh EMS to provide the best quality care to Pittsburgh residents," said EMS Chief Amera Gilchrist.
