MEDIA ADVISORY
Mayor Gainey to Sign Executive Orders to Protect Residents Against Trump's Rollbacks of Protections Against Housing Discrimination
WHO: Mayor Ed Gainey, City of Pittsburgh, Mayor Ed Gainey, Councilman R. Daniel Lavelle, Vice Chair, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Pittsburgh Commission of Human Relationships and Housing Justice Advocates.
WHAT: In the face of ongoing federal rollbacks to civil rights enforcement—including the Trump administration’s recent order rolling back protections against housing discrimination and segregation by dismantling of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule—Mayor Ed Gainey is taking decisive, local action to protect Pittsburgh residents from housing discrimination and displacement.
At this press conference, Mayor Gainey will announce two new Executive Orders that harness the City’s public financing power to advance equity and enforce local fair housing laws against the Trump administration’s attacks. These orders will:
-
Require that any developer receiving public financing from the City (grants, loans, etc.) must:
-
Prohibit landlords and developers who receive public funds from rejecting tenants based on how they pay their rent. That includes people using:
-
Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8)
-
Social Security, disability benefits, or other forms of public assistance
As the Trump administration weakens national housing protections, emboldening developers to exclude marginalized tenants, Gainey is drawing a line: public dollars will not fund discrimination in Pittsburgh.
WHEN: Friday, March 28, 2025 at 9 AM
WHERE: City-County Building, 5th floor Shared Space, 414 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219
Note: A mult box will not be available during this press conference
