Gainey Administration Celebrates
200th Anniversary of George Vashon Birth
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is thrilled to announce a historic celebration, marking the 200th anniversary of George B. Vashon's birth. This event, a tribute to a key African American figure in American history and a pioneer for civil rights, is a significant milestone. It will occur on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM inside the lobby at the City-County Building, 414 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
George B. Vashon was the first African American graduate of Oberlin College and became a respected lawyer, educator, and advocate for civil rights. His contributions to the fight for equality and justice continue to inspire generations after him. He was born to a progressive family, his father, John Vashon was one of the organizers of the Pittsburgh Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, and a wealthy business-man in early Pittsburgh.
According to George’s great, great grandson, Paul Thornell, “I’m so appreciative of Mayor Gainey’s gracious gesture in recognizing the life and work of George B. Vashon as we mark the 200th anniversary of his birth this year. Vashon’s early years growing up in Pittsburgh were a central part of the foundation of his legacy and accomplishments. Our family is so proud to tell his story as he was one of the leading abolitionists, one of the first Black college graduates, first Black college professors, and first Black lawyers of his time. Indeed, more should know about him and what he achieved. Mayor Gainey and the City of Pittsburgh are helping to shine a light on his great work and the powerful contribution of the Vashon family to this community.”
Notable Highlights Include:
Keynote Speeches: Local historians and dignitaries will share insights into Vashon's life and legacy.
Interactive Exhibits: Attendees can explore Vashon's impact on civil rights through engaging displays.
Community Engagement: Opportunities for attendees to share their reflections and stories related to Vashon's work.
This event is free and open to the public, and we encourage everyone interested in celebrating Vashon's legacy to attend. Join us for this afternoon of remembrance, reflection, and inspiration as we honor the life of a remarkable Black Pittsburgh pioneer.
