U.S. Department of Labor Announces Grant Award to Pittsburgh’s Catalyst Connection for Pittsburgh Workforce Hub Advanced Manufacturing Table
Catalyst to receive $716,701 in federal funding to increase women's participation in non-traditional occupations
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Mayor Ed Gainey joined U.S. Department of Labor Acting Secretary Julie Su as she announced the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant awards totaling $6 million dollars. Pittsburgh’s Catalyst Connection will receive a $716,701 grant to support the work to increase women’s participation in manufacturing jobs.
Federal investments into the Pittsburgh region are creating pathways to good jobs for our vulnerable and disadvantaged residents. This is exactly what the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America initiative is designed to accomplish.
“As the Biden-Harris administration continues to improve the lives of working people, creating family-sustaining jobs and growing an economy that works for everyone, we’re focused on gender equity and making sure all communities benefit,” said Acting Secretary Julie Su. “Our Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations grants support programs that train women for good union jobs, build equity into our workforce development system, and provide employers a pipeline of talent for hard-to-fill roles.”
“The Biden-Harris Administration’s continued financial investments into Pittsburgh’s Workforce Hub is making it possible for our underserved communities to have a path towards equitable career opportunities,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “ I am proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far, but there is more work to be done.” “I look forward to collaboration of the Workforce Hub's advanced manufacturing table and the community table to ensure that our underserved communities are provided with opportunities to thrive.”
The Pittsburgh Workforce Hub is made possible through a partnership between the White House Domestic Policy Council, Mayor Ed Gainey, the Department of Labor, and Partner4Work, which serves as the anchor institution to sustain and lead the long-term work of the Hub.
"Today’s investments are about more than just dollars—they’re about creating good-paying, union jobs that lift up every corner of our community," said Congresswoman Summer Lee. "Thanks to the coordination between federal, state, and local leaders, we’re seeing the transformative impact these funds are having on Pittsburgh. Together, we’re building an economy that works for everyone—especially those who’ve been left out for far too long."
Also recognized today, were investments that the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation have made in the Clean Energy Sector here in Pittsburgh. Recent awards have been received by both Pittsburgh Workforce Hub partner organizations like Landforce, as well as the City of Pittsburgh directly.
Everyone that has taken the public pledge and signed-on to the Pittsburgh Good Jobs Principles are committed to ensuring the ability for residents to get good paying jobs. Landforce focuses its work towards providing equitable access to good jobs for justice impacted workers.
Pittsburgh is the latest stop on Acting Secretary Su Good Jobs Tour that started in 2024. Since then, she has visited cities in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Virginia.
