Highland Park to Receive Safety Improvements
‘Quick-Build’ Safety Implements to be Rebuilt
Pittsburgh, PA – Motorists who travel through Highland Park may notice improvements to previous traffic safety upgrades this week. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will begin the process of ‘hardscaping’ this week on Negley Avenue at Bryant Street. ’Hardscaping’ is the term used to describe replacing quick-build traffic safety implements with longer-lasting ones made of more-durable materials.
The quick-build curb extensions, in this case, were installed in 2015 and utilized pavement markings and flex posts to effectively increase sightlines and shorten pedestrian crossings.
“The innovative minds in the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure have the safety of Pittsburgh residents as their top priority. Their traffic safety measures enhance the well-being of residents and improve roadway safety without the need for extensive construction,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
Two of the four quick-build curb extensions are being removed in favor of permanent concrete curb extensions that will include ADA curb ramps for accessibility. In addition to the above curb extensions and ramps, this intersection will also receive stop signs in order to better control traffic along with high visibility ‘piano key’ style crosswalks and stop bars.
The curb extension implementation is expected to be completed by the end of the week while the pavement markings are expected to be completed by the end of the following week. The project is expected to cause minimal traffic disruptions while work is underway.
