Mayor Ed Gainey Signs Emergency Declaration For 2nd Avenue Commons Shelter Fire
Declaration will help expedite repair of the only low-barrier shelter in the City
Pittsburgh, PA – Today Mayor Ed Gainey signed a Declaration of Disaster Emergency over the fire and condemnation of the 2nd Avenue Commons Shelter.
The declaration will direct the City of Pittsburgh Chief of Emergency Management, the Director of City Planning, and the director of Permits, Licenses, & Inspections to coordinate the necessary activities for this emergency response. These City leaders are charged to take all appropriate action required to address the need for temporary shelter facilitates and the swift repair and reopening of 2nd Avenue Commons in order to protect public health, safety, and welfare in the City of Pittsburgh.
“Expediting the repair and reopening of the 2nd Avenue Commons is critical for the health and safety for some of our most vulnerable residents,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “This order will ensure that we are able to move with the speed required to meet this moment in order to return this critical piece of our health and human services infrastructure to operation.”
Corresponding legislation ratifying and extending the declaration for 180 days, or until December 8th, 2024, was submitted to council on Friday June 7th, 2024.
