TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT IN HAZELWOOD
Project Starts June 5th on Hazelwood Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA – Motorists and cyclists who travel on Hazelwood Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood Neighborhood should be prepared for upcoming roadway changes. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will begin traffic calming construction on Hazelwood Avenue on Wednesday June 5th.
The calming project includes the construction of four speed humps on Hazelwood Ave. between Second Ave. and Greenfield Ave. Permanent signage and pavement markings will be installed to alert road users of the approaching traffic calming elements on Tuesday, June 4th and Friday, June 7th respectively.
“When projects like this take place in our neighborhoods. I see progress towards achieving zero traffic deaths in our community. Which will help us achieve our goal of making Pittsburgh the safest city in America,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
The calming project is the result of data collected in 2022 indicating that 96% of vehicles traveling on Hazelwood Ave. exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph, with a maximum speed recorded at 86 mph. Indicating a strong need for traffic calming intervention.
Construction work is tentatively expected to start on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. During the speed hump construction each lane will be intermittently closed to traffic. Flaggers will be stationed to direct traffic.
The calming project is expected to last two days, weather permitting. Construction will occur daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday from Greenfield Ave. to Frank St. and Thursday from Second Ave. to Gladstone St. Temporary “No Parking” signage will be posted throughout the roadway where work is taking place, prior to the construction.
