Welcome to the 2019 Legislative Session!

Hello friends,

Tuesday marked the beginning of the 2019 Legislative Session and to say we hit the ground running would be an understatement. The House Committee on Revenue has already been assigned 88 bills to review, which my staff and I will be studying in detail.

Additionally, there have been several key pieces of legislation and topics that have gained traction with both the media throughout the state and with constituents. I have been receiving numerous emails from both you in the district, and Oregonians all over the state in regards to SB 501 and Open Enrollment. I want you to know: I am listening.

You have made it abundantly clear that you will not tolerate the new gun legislation being proposed. SB 501, specifically, was crafted at the request of students and in partnership with students in the Portland metro area. This bill was a response to the devastating school shootings we have witnessed over the past few years. The students who helped develop the bill don’t feel safe in their schools and this legislation was the result. Sadly, they don’t realize that it will not ensure their safety, but will instead create non-sensical restrictions at the expense of law-abiding gun owners. Please know that I will be voting against this legislation.

Open Enrollment is a policy which allows families to choose the school they would like to attend, regardless of their school district. Although there are both costs and benefits to this program, it is helpful in that it takes account that schools are not a one-size-fits-all environment. As any parent can attest, every child has different needs and Open Enrollment creates a way for all students to thrive in their educational experiences. After hearing from local school boards and parents, who have predominantly requested my support of Open Enrollment, I have co-sponsored HB 2773. This bill would eliminate the sunset of Open Enrollment. However, if it does not pass or the sunset is not extended, then this program will end on June 30, 2019.

I will continue to keep you updated as the Session progresses, but feel free to reach out to my office if you have any questions or concerns about specific legislation. Also, if you find yourself in the Salem area, please let us know! I always make time for anyone in the district and would appreciate getting to know you.

Have a great weekend!
