Multnomah Falls Viaducts: Historic Columbia River Highway remains closed east of Multnomah Falls
The Historic Highway east of Multnomah Falls Lodge remains closed to all traffic, including bicycles and vehicles, until spring 2026 as crews continue restoration and repairs to the 100 year-old elevated highway structure.
Crews recently paved the viaduct and installed new supportive rebar beneath the road surface. The project will restore the structure and preserve its appearance with its original color and texture once complete.

Construction to connect the 0.7 mile gap of the Historic Highway State Trail between Viento State Park and Mitchell Point is underway. Crews have established the construction site limits and staged materials in the area.
The temporary pedestrian-only trail in place since late 2024 is not available during construction.
Once complete in late 2026, the State Trail will provide nearly 10 miles of continuous car-free ADA-accessible trail for people walking, biking and rolling in the Columbia River Gorge between Wyeth State Park and the Mitchell Point Tunnel.
Trail users can expect:
- The Historic Highway State Trail to close about 2 miles east of Viento State Park during construction.
- Viento State Park and the Mitchell Point Tunnel will both remain open during construction. The Mitchell Point Tunnel parking lot (Exit 58) remains open for I-84 drivers.
I-84 travelers can expect:
- Periodic shoulder closures on I-84 east of Viento State Park.
You can read more about the state trail and the last remaining segments in our annual Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail Progress Report.
