I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project: Progress ramps up for spring

Waterline excavation work begins Monday while bridge deck demolition continues

Excavation work for waterline installation, begins Monday, April 14.

WEST LINN With spring in full swing, ODOT is ramping up activity on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project. This progress report will highlight what's happening next on our biggest construction project in more than 45 years.

Starting Monday, April 14 rock excavation work will begin under the Abernethy Bridge on the West Linn side adjacent to OR 43 and is scheduled to run through Friday, April 25. The majority of the work will happen between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a chance overnight excavation work may be necessary.

This work will focus on excavating channels for waterline installation.

  1. What is being removed? Solid basalt is being broken up and removed to accommodate waterline installation to the proper depth.
  2. What would make nighttime excavation work necessary? Sections of the waterline installation will need to cross the travel lanes on OR 43, and some of these installations will require rock excavation. This work is best done at night when traffic volumes are low.
  3. What steps are being taken to minimize the noise levels? Hammering on the subsurface will be done using an excavator. We will make every effort to minimize noise. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.

Residents in the vicinity of the construction area should anticipate elevated noise levels while this work is occurring. A 24/7 nighttime noise hotline is available at: 503-276-7809.

*As with any construction project, dates and timing are subject to change.

Abernethy Bridge deck demolition night work

Demolition work continues on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge deck.

Bridge deck demolition continues

OREGON CITY – Overnight deck demolition work resumed on Monday and will last through next week as progress continues on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project. Next week's deck demolition is scheduled from Monday, April 14 to Friday, April 18. Work will last from 9:30 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. each night. There is a chance work could continue into the week of April 21.

Work will focus on removing portions of the existing bridge deck in preparation for the eventual widening of the structure.

  1. What is being removed? Sections of the concrete barrier and concrete deck surface over OR 99E along northbound and southbound I-205 in preparation for girder removal.
  2. Why is the demolition being done now and where does it fit in the project? In order to install new steel girders and fittings to handle the upcoming widening on the Abernethy Bridge, some sections of the existing bridge deck need to be removed to make room for the new sections.
  3. Why is demolition work happening at night? Night work is needed since some demolition will occur directly above OR 99E and other areas with active vehicle and pedestrian foot traffic during the day. These areas need to be closed for safety purposes, and we do this when traffic volumes are low.
  4. What are the next steps? Demolition work will continue through May. Some demolition work will occur during the daytime, when it can be done safely.

Follow the progress live on the project construction cameras.

We know the noise from construction work can be disruptive. Again, we appreciate your patience.

Residents in the vicinity of the construction area should anticipate elevated noise levels while this work is occurring. A 24/7 nighttime noise hotline is available at: 503-276-7809.

Future Work

Coming this summer, May-June 2025 (tentative)

In-water pile driving at Abutment 1 will occur sometime in mid-May during the day (likely 7 a.m.-8 p.m.) for approximately 2-3 weeks. More details will be provided once confirmed.

What is this project?

ODOT is upgrading the Abernethy Bridge, which spans the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, to withstand a major earthquake and widening it to accommodate a future third travel lane. Additional improvements are being made to the bridge's adjacent on- and off-ramps to improve safety. This work is expected to be completed in 2026.
