The Abernethy Bridge project continues to make progress

Abernethy Bridge support beam construction

Crossbeam work underway on the Abernethy Bridge.

Significant strides continue on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge construction project. Our construction focus for 2025 is completing the retrofitting of pier crossbeams and installing a temporary ramp to and from OR 99 on the Oregon City side while we construct the permanent ramp. Other priorities include enhancing work zone safety, fostering economic opportunities, and safeguarding the environment. Stay updated on the construction impacts here.

OR 217 is in its final year of construction

Or 217 Project March

Traffic is shifted on OR 217 so there is space in the center to continue construction and keep highway lanes open as much as possible.

We are in our final year of construction for the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year. When the weather warms up, the contractor plans to do final paving in the project area. We are excited that paving gets us one step closer to opening the new auxiliary lanes which in turn should ease congestion and reduce crashes by 20-30%. Stay up to date on the project and read construction updates on the project website.

Portland students tour the I-5 Interstate Bridge

IBR Student Bridge Tour

Students from Portland’s Bridger Creative Science School tour the Interstate Bridge to learn about the history of its natural and built environment.

A group of students ranging from third to eighth grade are preparing to submit essays to the Oregon Historical Society’s State and National Essay Contest on the rich history surrounding the 108-year-old Interstate Bridge. The group joined Interstate Bridge Replacement Program leaders for a presentation where they learned about construction practices, why community input matters and how the environmental process shapes our work. They got to go on a walking tour of the existing bridge sidewalk and surrounding area and also participated in a Q&A, diving into traffic volumes, upcoming construction work to replace the aging Interstate Bridge. The IBR Program was honored to meet with such an inquisitive group, and we are eager to see their work when they submit essays to the OHS competition this spring.
