Construction begins this month on U.S. 101 sidewalk and pedestrian crossing project

BROOKINGS – Contractors for ODOT plan to begin work the week of March 18 on a project that will improve bicycle and pedestrian facilities along a three-quarter mile section of highway between downtown Brookings and Harris Beach State Park.
The U.S. 101 Parkview Drive to Lucky Lane project will replace sidewalk curb ramps at several locations between Easy Street and Lucky Lane. The new ramps will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving accessibility for people who use wheelchairs.
Near Ransom Creek, the project will extend the northbound U.S. 101 bike lane and sidewalk more than 1,000 feet north, install a push-button pedestrian crossing with flashing lights near Ransom Avenue, and adjust the highway travel lanes between Heather Lane and Arnold Lane.
During construction, drivers can expect intermittent daytime lane and shoulder closures through the work zone. Flaggers will provide traffic control. Most delays will be brief, though some could reach up to 20 minutes. Local drivers should also watch for occasional lane closures on side roads near the work zone.
When sidewalks are closed for construction, alternate pedestrian routes will be provided.
Most construction will take place during daylight hours, though some night work may also be necessary. Local residents should expect noise consistent with road and sidewalk construction.
Tidewater Contractors of Brookings was awarded the contract after a successful bid of $3,143,165. Construction is scheduled for completion in September.
ODOT is responsible for the contract and delivery of this project. The agency has worked in partnership with the City of Brookings during the project’s planning and design phases and will continue to coordinate with the City during construction.
