HOOD RIVER – A Thursday morning crash caused a full closure of westbound I-84 from Hood River (milepost 64) to four miles west of Multnomah Falls (milepost 27). Winter weather conditions caused a white out scenario which ultimately involved an estimated 20 to 30 vehicles spread across multiple crash scenes blocking the westbound lanes three miles west of between mileposts 28-29.

Road conditions on I-84 in the affected areas are considered slick, but passable. This series of crashes was caused by a combination of high winds blowing snow and drivers traveling too fast for the winter weather conditions in the area.

At the time of release there is no ETA on reopening. Crews are working to clear the area.

Elsewhere on the I-84 corridor:

  • I-84 is closed in both directions between La Grande, Exit 265, and Baker City, Exit 302.
  • I-84 westbound is closed to trucks between Ontario, Exit 374, and Baker City, Exit 302.
  • Closures are due to blowing and drifting snow with visibility less than 500 feet.

Stay safe on the roads:

  • If you must head out, check conditions at TripCheck.com first.
  • Slow down and increase following distance. Bridges and shaded areas freeze first.
  • Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready—tires, brakes, and wipers in good condition.
  • Stay visible by using headlights and clearing snow from windows.
  • Follow roadside message signs for important updates.
  • Use public transit if possible, and check schedules in advance.
  • Give our workers plenty of room to work and never pass snowplows on the right—give them extra space.
  • If you abandon your vehicle, it will be towed. Stay with your car if safe to do so.
