Wondering about the Innovative Mobility Program? We have exciting updates for you!

June 6, 2024

To friends of walking, rolling and public transportation,

We are delighted to share a variety of funding updates about the Innovative Mobility Program. You can read the highlights below and find more details on our website about what’s coming up.

NEW! Competitive Grants

Our new competitive grants program will support studies, assessments, pilots, service expansion, and equipment. This includes a variety of activities and projects that increase access to active and public transportation, including shared mobility services. (Shared mobility includes bikeshare, e-scooter share, carshare, and more.) To maximize the impact of the funds, we have created four types of competitive grants that are designed to build upon one another over time. The four types of grants are:

  • Study and Assessment Grants to help agencies better understand the transportation needs of specific communities. These grants can also be used to fund studies to determine the viability of shared mobility services in a particular area and other types of projects.
  • Pilot Grants to support the piloting of new shared mobility services, including funds for operations and minor infrastructure.
  • Service Expansion Grants to support the expansion of existing shared mobility services, including funds for operations and minor infrastructure.
  • Capital and Equipment Grants to support investment in capital and equipment purchases for shared mobility services, such as bicycles, microtransit vans, and others.

Timeline

We will have two cycles for each type of grant.

  • Fall 2025. The first solicitation will open this fall for Study and Assessment Grants and Pilot Grants.
  • Spring 2025. The second solicitation will open in spring 2025 for Service Expansion and Capital and Equipment Grants.
  • 2026 and 2027. Additional solicitations will follow in 2026 and 2027 so that interested entities will have multiple opportunities to apply for funding.

What else is coming up?

Investments in Statewide Vanpool and Transportation Options: The Innovative Mobility Program is helping develop a statewide vanpool program to support new vanpools in both urban and rural areas. A Request for Proposals for a contractor to assist with this program is coming soon. We are also investing a portion of the IMP funds in our Transportation Options program to increase and expand their equity initiatives.

Shared Micromobility Coordination Study: A Shared Micromobility Coordination Study will begin this summer. (Micromobility includes bikeshare and e-scooter share.) The purpose of the study is to explore options for a coordinated bikeshare system and identify next steps. The study will be completed by spring 2025.

Microgrants program update

We are no longer accepting new microgrant applications because we have met our funding limit of $350,000 for 2024. If you did not get a chance to apply this year, additional funds will be available in 2026. We appreciate all the interest in this program and will share an updated list of funded projects soon!
