Travelers should expect lane and ramp closures on I-84 and I-205 this summer
Construction continues between Interstate 205 and Hood River while crews improve Interstate 84 and extend the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

Interstate 84 lane and ramp closures this summer east of Interstate 205
Paving, resurfacing and bridge repair continues on I-84 between Interstate 205 and Marine Drive (exit 17). This summer, expect:
- Nighttime lane closures and occasional on- and off-ramp closures between I-205 and Troutdale.
- Up to several weekend and nighttime closures of I-84 west at I-205 beginning as soon as late June. We will share closure dates in advance.
- Nighttime closures of I-84 east at I-205. We will share closure dates in advance.
In general, lane and ramp closures will be limited to:
- Sunday to Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Friday night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.
- Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Sunday
When ramps are closed, detour signs will be posted and detour maps will be available on our website.
Toothrock Tunnel: Nighttime lane closures between Multnomah Falls and Cascade Locks
Night work continues between Multnomah Falls and Cascade Locks. In June, travelers can expect:
- Shoulder closures and nighttime single lane closures in both directions of I-84 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights between Cascade Locks and Multnomah Falls.
The around-the-clock lane closures from Sunday evenings to Thursday afternoons in the Toothrock Tunnel near Bonneville Dam are now complete! Thank you for your patience while we repaired the tunnel floor.
Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail work advances
Construction continues on a new two-mile section of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail connecting Viento State Park and Mitchell Point to the east. Work also continues at the nearby Mitchell Point Tunnel segment.
The Viento State Park trailhead for the Historic Highway State Trail heading west toward Starvation Creek has reopened.
Travelers can expect:
- Daytime single lane closures on I-84 east Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- I-84 east Exit 58 to remains closed during construction.
Landslide repair continues west of Multnomah Falls
Construction of two new culverts under I-84 and the Historic Highway continues one mile west of Multnomah Falls, the site of nearly 30 debris flows in 2021. When complete, the culverts will drain stormwater off the steep slope and away from roadways. Travels can expect:
- Periodic single lane closures in both directions on I-84 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
- Shoulder closures on I-84.
Hood River intersection improvement project: Cascade Avenue at Rand Road
Construction is underway at U.S. 30 (Cascade Avenue) at Rand Road in Hood River to align the north and south roads of the intersection and install a new signal to improve safety and accessibility.
Work continues at the northeast corner of the intersection in June. Travelers can expect:
- Rand Road northbound is closed at U.S. 30. Detour using 20th Street.
- Left turns restricted at intersection.
- Periodic nighttime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic.
- Signed and accessible pedestrian detours.
TriMet's “A Better Red” project affects I-84 and I-205 travel in east Portland
TriMet’s A Better Red Project is extending the MAX Red Line west and improving system reliability. The project requires:
- Nighttime lane closures and shoulder closures on I-84 and I-205.
- Full closures of I-84 east Exit 7 from June 4 to July 3.
- Up to several full weekend closures of I-84 at I-205 later in 2023.
Historic Highway spring maintenance
Crews are completing maintenance work along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including:
- Removing trees in danger of falling into the roadway near Latourell with flaggers directing traffic for about two weeks starting as soon as June 5.
