Results show I-205 congestion drops from 14 to two hours daily with tolling and highway improvements

Tolling video

This video discusses how tolls could affect traffic.

Since discussions began about using tolling to manage congestion, we’ve heard many questions and concerns about how tolls will affect traffic and local communities.

Analysis shows that variable rate tolling and investing in I-205 improvements will help reduce congestion. Join an upcoming webinar on Tuesday, Feb. 15 or Wednesday, Feb. 16 to learn more.

I-205 Improvements Project improves safety, creates earthquake-ready bridges and business opportunities

Abernethy Bridge I-205 Improvements Project

Seismic updates will make the Abernethy Bridge and I-205 passable and the only critical lifeline interstate route across the Willamette River after a major earthquake in the Portland region.

The I-205 Improvements Project is currently seeking contractor bids to construct the first phase of the project, creating an earthquake-ready Abernethy Bridge and improving safety and operations in the area for those who drive, walk and roll. Nearly $35-40 million in contracts will go to Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian-Pacific Islander, Subcontinental Asian or women-owned businesses that are certified as a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise.

ODOT's Urban Mobility Strategy for the Portland metropolitan region

Urban Mobility Strategy Map

Welcome to the Urban Mobility Office newsletter: February edition

We are working on getting the Portland metropolitan region out of a jam, so people and goods can get where they need to go.

Hours of traffic delays are coming at a high cost to individuals, businesses, and communities. Portland ranks No. 11 in the United States for the worst traffic congestion, and it's only projected to get worse.

The Urban Mobility Strategy's once-in-a-generation projects – I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement, I-205 Improvements, Tolling, OR-217 Auxiliary Lanes, the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program and I-5 Boone Bridge – along with our partnerships and investments in transit, pedestrian and rolling paths, will work together to reduce congestion in the Portland region.

These projects ensure our infrastructure is seismically resilient and create sustainable revenue to modernize and maintain the transportation system for decades to come. Learn more about ODOT's Urban Mobility Strategy.
