ODOT Deploys DMS Pilot Project on S.R. 32
Lebanon (Monday, February 10, 2020) - Making the most of what we have and making our system work better, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Division of Statewide Planning is piloting a digital message board project on state Route 32 in Clermont County.
These signs are part of an integrated statewide system that provide motorists with real-time travel information regarding travel times and traffic impacts due to construction or crashes.
Traditionally, ODOT has not used the signs on Ohio’s non-freeway routes to display travel times. However, the department has initiated a study with the University of Cincinnati to evaluate the use of new technologies and determine the potential benefits to motorists. Providing motorists on S.R. 32 with travel time information to downtown Cincinnati, the signs will deliver information that may be valuable for their daily commute and could limit cell phone use and reduce distracted driving.
“It’s important that we utilize technology like this to ease congestion and improve safety on our roadways,” said Governor Mike DeWine.
During February and early March, ODOT and U.C. will be collecting data and reviewing it in tandem with the department’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO), which combines technology, planning, maintenance and construction to optimize safety, mobility and reliability of the transportation system.
The pilot message will be deployed on the sign located on westbound S.R. 32, between the Glen Este-Withamsville Road intersection and the Eastgate Boulevard interchange, and the month-long study period for use of the signs on S.R. 32 begins today, February 10, and will continue until March 6.
Once the pilot phase is completed, ODOT will evaluate the data collected before, during and after to determine the potential benefits for motorists and use of the signs to deliver messages on non-freeway routes.
