I-75 New Ramp Meters to be Activated at Hopple St. and Mitchell Ave. Interchanges
Meters will be turned on the morning of July 16
Lebanon, OH (July 11, 2018) - Ohio Department of Transportation District 8 Deputy Director Tammy Campbell announced today that new ramp meters will be permanently activated along Interstate 75 during the morning rush hour on July 16.
“These traffic calming devices will help to improve the flow of traffic on mainline I-75,” said Campbell. “While the ramp meters help control congestion they more importantly help improve safety for motorists.”
The I-75 interchanges with Hopple Street and Mitchell
Avenue will both have new ramp meters controlling traffic merging onto the
interstate.
The ramp meter devices are a two-light signal (red and
green only) to manage the rate of vehicles entering the interstate. The average
daily traffic on I-75 in the vicinity of the Hopple St. and Mitchell Ave.
interchanges ranges from approximately 126,000 vehicles to nearly 155,000 vehicles.
Additionally, crashes along the corridor in the area of these two interchanges are
related to congestion along the interstate and at entrance ramps.
The ramp meters are designed and programmed to operate
only at times of peak travel demand, during off-peak times they will remain
green allowing motorists to merge onto the freeway without stopping.
Additional ramp meters will be constructed for existing
interchanges along I-75 as future phases of upgrading the interstate are
completed over the next decade.
