See if you qualify for Free File
 If your 2025 federal adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less, you may qualify to use Free File software to e-file both your federal and state returns—at no cost.
The criteria change every year, so even if you haven't been eligible before, you may be eligible now.

Gather your documentation
 Have copies of all your Forms W-2 and income statements.
If you received unemployment compensation, visit Department of Labor: 1099-G Tax Form to obtain a copy of your Form 1099-G. Include the full amount of your unemployment compensation from Form1099-G on your New York State personal income tax return.
Verify the amounts of any payments you made throughout the year, such as estimated tax payments or tax you paid with a filing extension request.
Have your banking information to request direct deposit (Español | 繁體中文 | Русский | বাংলা | Kreyòl ayisyen | 한국어)—it's the easiest, fastest way to get your refund.
Review available income tax credits
 Have kids? Beginning this year, New York State is substantially increasing the maximum amount of its Empire State child credit.

 If you owe a balance on your New York State income tax return, you can pay—or schedule a payment for—any day up to and including the April 15 due date.
