San Juan County Earns Triple Crown and State Award for Financial Excellence
San Juan County has earned the highest awards for financial accountability, being recognized at a statewide and nationwide level.
Last Thursday in Santa Fe, San Juan County staff members and commissioners were presented with the large county Audit and Accountability Award with Continued Excellence for fiscal year 2023 by New Mexico State Auditor Joseph Maestas. This is the seventh time San Juan County has earned the distinction. Audit and Accountability Awards serve to recognize excellence in audit results, timely audit reports, and clean findings. A good audit reflects a county’s strong finance department, elected officials, and management. San Juan County is one of 12 New Mexico counties to receive the award this year.
Additionally, San Juan County has been recognized on a national level with the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for fiscal year 2023, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award for fiscal year 2023, as well as the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fiscal year 2024. This is the 18th consecutive year the County has earned a Certificate of Excellence, 4rd consecutive Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award, and 15th consecutive budget presentation award.
The combination of the three awards makes San Juan County a GFOA Triple Crown winner for the fourth year in a row.
To receive these awards, San Juan County satisfied all accounting and reporting standards while following all nationally recognized reporting guidelines. Each submission is adjudicated by a team of financial professionals.
The awards all mean that San Juan County is adhering to the highest standards of accounting practice and oversight of spending taxpayer dollars. It is a reflection of collective dedication and hard work within the Finance department, and through all parts of the agency, to ensure that the County’s records are accurate, reliable, and reported fairly.

Our annual "Shop with Your Cop" event created lasting memories for local children, as they teamed up with law enforcement officers to enjoy a holiday shopping experience. Children were selected through referrals from law enforcement agencies who have engaged with them in some way over the last year. We are filled with gratitude for the incredible support from our community and the hard work of our San Juan County Sheriff's Office Foundation, whose fundraising efforts made this event a success! This wonderful partnership strengthened relationships and brought warmth and joy to all involved.
