Driving is one of the most dangerous activities your employees do each day, whether they’re on the clock or just commuting. Crashes caused by speeding, distracted driving and lane departure can lead to serious injury, lost time and business disruptions. But most are preventable.
This month’s topic helps employees set themselves up for success on the road with small changes that make a big difference.
Top Risks and How to Reduce Them
1. Lane Departure In North Dakota, more than 1,000 injuries and 53 fatalities in 2023 were caused by vehicles leaving their lane, often at high speeds. These statistics include crashes both on and off the job.
What helps: Stay alert, drive sober, obey speed limits, and use lane assist technology when available.
2.Distracted Driving It’s not just texting. Eating, talking, adjusting the radio – even hands-free tech – can take your mind off the road.
What helps: Set your GPS and playlist before you go. Put your phone out of reach. Use “do not disturb” mode.
3. Speeding & Aggressive Driving A factor in 1 out of 3 fatal crashes in North Dakota in 2023. High speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash severity.
What helps: Leave early, follow posted limits, and adjust for road conditions and traffic flow.
4. Seat Belts Save Lives Nearly half of North Dakota crash fatalities last year involved people not wearing seat belts.
What helps: Buckle up: every seat, every trip. It keeps drivers in control and passengers protected.
What You Can Do to Encourage Safe Driving
1. Share this month’s email and flyer with your team. 2. Include safe driving reminders in safety huddles or internal channels. 3. Use digital signage or breakroom posters to reinforce key messages. 4. Encourage leadership to model smart driving habits.
