Union County Offices Closed for Independence Day

In recognition of Independence Day, most Union County Government offices and facilities will be closed on Friday, July 4. Be sure to check for any schedule changes related to the holiday.

Please note the next UC Horizon will be sent on Friday, July 11. 

Union County AAA Bond Rating from All Major Credit Agencies

AAA Bond Rating

Union County has received the highest possible AAA bond rating from all three major credit rating agencies including Standard and Poor’s Moody’s and Fitch Ratings. Each agency also assigned a stable outlook highlighting the County’s strong financial management and overall fiscal health. The County also earned AA+ and Aa1 ratings on its limited obligation bonds and certificates of participation. Click here to read the full story and learn what this means for our community.

Give Input on Strategies for the Rural Land Use Plan

Are you interested in strategies to preserve open space in Union County? A group of residents appointed by the Union County Board of Commissioners have been working with County planners to develop a Rural Land Use Plan, which will serve as a guide for managing development in the rural parts of Union County. They want your input! Please visit the plan's project page to give your input on potential strategies that may be included in the plan. The online survey will remain open until July 20

Election Changes for City of Monroe Voters

Election Questions and Stars

Monroe's municipal elections have been moved to even-numbered years and will now be partisan races under a new state law. As a result, there will be no candidate filing in July for Monroe.

The next Monroe election will be in 2026, with new requirements for how candidates file. These changes do not affect the other 13 Union County municipalities. Learn what this means for voters and candidates in Monroe.

Candidate Filing Period

The candidate filing period for the Nov. 4, 2025 Municipal Elections will open at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 7 and close at noon on Friday, July 18. Candidates must file in person at the Union County Board of Elections. All contests are nonpartisan and there will be no primary election. For more details, visit the Board of Elections website.

Important Notice to Transportation Passengers: System Upgrade Coming July 1

Union County Transportation is launching a new and improved scheduling software on Tuesday, July 1. Riders can expect a more user-friendly booking system, enhanced scheduling, and updates and alerts sent by text and email. Please allow extra time for booking or travel next week and contact Customer Service at 704-292-2511 if you need assistance. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve your experience.

NCDOT Intersection Closure for Roundabout Construction

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will temporarily close the intersection of Potter and Wesley Chapel roads in Wesley Chapel starting Monday, July 7 for roundabout construction. All traffic will be rerouted using signed detours during the project. The intersection is expected to reopen by Sept. 1, 2025. Visit DriveNC.gov for the latest road closures and updates.

Safety Tips from the Fire Marshal's Office

Grill Safely

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day make safety part of the plan. Watch a short video from the Fire Marshal’s Office with helpful tips to keep your cookouts safe and fun. Remember to keep grills away from structures, clean them before each use, and never leave them unattended.

Firework Safety

Prioritize safety and leave fireworks to the professionals. If you plan to light legal fireworks, keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of an accident. Never point or throw fireworks at anyone.

2025 Fourth of July Events

Unionville

The Unionville Lions Club is hosting the 4th of July Celebration with a car show, rides, food, and good music. The event starts at 9 a.m. on July 4, near the Unionville Community Center.

Waxhaw

Join the Town of Waxhaw on July 4th for the annual Independence Day Celebration parade! Floats, bands and horses will be trotting down the streets of Downtown Waxhaw starting at 10 a.m. on July 4.

Indian Trail

The Town of Indian Trail continues an annual tradition with a parade decked in red, white and blue. The parade travels down Indian Trail Road on July 4, starting at 10 a.m.

Monroe

Celebrate Independence Day in Downtown Monroe on July 4, from 4 to 9:30 p.m. Fireworks start at sundown at Belk-Tonawanda Park.
