April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Being an attentive and alert driver can help prevent crashes that lead to unintentional injury and death. With the wide use of smartphones in the United States, distracted driving has become an important traffic safety topic. While cell phones and navigation devices often are the culprit when it comes to distracted driving, conventional distractions such as interacting with passengers and eating also contribute to crashes. Distracting tasks can affect drivers in different ways and can be categorized as visual, manual, and cognitive distraction.
Here are a few safe driving points:
- Hands-free devices like earbuds and talk-to-text features are much safer than handling your phone while driving. Fact or Myth?
- Myth - Research shows that any driver use of electronic devices increases their cognitive distraction, meaning they can’t fully focus on driving.
- At 55 mph, taking your eyes off the road for five seconds is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Fact or Myth?
- Fact - At 55mph, you’ll travel more than 100 yards in five seconds, more than the length of a football field.
- Distracted driving only affects the people inside the car.
- Myth - Distracted driving is dangerous for those inside and outside the car, including other drivers and passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
