Superintendent Hedalen, Representative Tilleman Introduce House Bill 745 to Strengthen School Safety
HELENA – Superintendent of Public Instruction Susie Hedalen and Representative Tilleman introduced today House Bill 745, a critical piece of legislation that will require background checks for certain school employees and volunteers. This bill is a proactive step toward ensuring the safety and well-being of Montana’s students.
“This legislation is about prevention,” Superintendent Hedalen stated. “Every parent should have the confidence that their child’s school is a safe and secure environment. House Bill 745 strengthens our commitment to student safety by ensuring that appropriate background checks are in place for school employees, as well as individuals such as coaches or parent chaperones who participate in overnight trips. Thank you Representative Tilleman for introducing this critical bill for student safety.”
The bill ensures that those who work closely with students whether in the classroom, on the field, or during school-sponsored activities meet safety standards that protect Montana’s children. By implementing these safeguards, the legislation reinforces the state’s commitment to creating secure learning environments. While the majority of schools already have policies and practices in place, this bill ensures the safety of Montana students. This bill will eliminate inconsistencies and create a uniform standard to ensure clarity and prioritize student safety.

The Office of Public Instruction will continue to support policies that enhance school safety and ensure that all students can learn and grow in a protected environment.
