Prison records

The Montana History Portal is home to some of the Montana State Prison Records from the Montana Historical Society Library and Archives. The records can be sorted by alias, crime, location of crime, gender, and date of incarceration. They provide a fascinating look at human behavior. The physical collection consists of records of the Montana State Prison (1869-1974), the Board of Pardons (1890-1965), the Board of Prison Commissioners (1890-1962), and the United States Penitentiary, Montana Territory. This digital collection consists of approximately fifteen thousand prisoner description sheets with mug shots from 1910-1955. Post-1932 records may also include FBI arrest sheets.
