French Language Subject Headings
In 2017 the National Library of Canada moved their catalog to WorldCat and migrated to the OCLC ILS. Since then, we have seen French language subject headings in OCLC bibliographic records. These subject headings are found in MARC 6XX tags with a second indicator of ‘6’.
In 2023 we began suppressing these subject headings from displays in Enterprise. The headings were retained in our bib records and visible in WorkFlows. After receiving questions about removing these headings, we discussed the issue with the CMC and will remove these subject headings on import of new records. We do not have plans remove French language headings in records already in the system at this time.
We will make the necessary updates by the Members Council meeting on October 23. There we will demonstrate the steps catalogers will need to take to confirm their settings at that meeting. We will also update our SmartPort Knowledge Base at that time as well.
Why is There a URL After Some Author Names?!
We have received questions about the long URLs displayed after author names in both Enterprise and WorkFlows. These URLs are actually URIs, or Universal Resource Identifiers. OCLC is adding these to bib records to pave the way for a linked data world. They will become more useful but, in the meantime, can look a lot like clutter. We have suppressed them from display in Enterprise and from some wizards in WorkFlows. However, these URIs should be retained in our records.
Be sure to attend the October 23 Members Council meeting for further discussion of URIs.
