Keeping Food Safe When Cooking

and Eating Outdoors

  • Every year, hundreds of Montanans contract foodborne illnesses, with summer being a peak time due to warm weather promoting germ growth. Following the four steps to food safety – Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill - can help protect you and your loved ones from food poisoning, especially when grilling, cooking, and eating outside.
  • Certain populations are at a higher risk of foodborne illness, including older adults, younger children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Special care should be taken when preparing food for these populations.
  • Hot food should be held at or above 140°F, and cold food should be held at or below 40°F. Remember to keep hot food hot and cold food cold while enjoying the outdoors this summer.
