Montana Vital Statistics

  • Monitoring vital events, including births, deaths, and fetal deaths, is an important way of monitoring the health of communities. The 2022 Montana Vital Statistics Annual Report is available now.
  • A few key findings include: the overall mortality rate in Montana declined in 2022 to about the same as it was in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic; there were fewer births than deaths among Montana citizens for the third consecutive year in 2022; and between 2018-2022, heart disease was the leading cause of death, cancer was second, and COVID-19 was the third among Montanans.
