Health in the 406

March is National Kidney Month

  • Approximately 1 in 7 US adults, about 35.5 million people, have chronic kidney disease (CKD), and as many as 9 in 10 adults with CKD do not know they have it.
  • Chronic kidney disease occurs when your kidneys do not work as well and lose their ability to filter your blood. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or both you are at the highest risk for CKD. Find out your risk for developing kidney disease by taking the risk test.
  • You can take steps to prevent kidney disease by improving your lifestyle, to include making healthier food choices, increasing physical activity, managing diabetes and high blood pressure and talking with your healthcare provider.
