Dear Ward 11 Neighbors,

I could not be prouder of how Minneapolis continues to show up in the face of tragic and unconstitutional violence. We are in the global spotlight yet again, and we have risen to meet the moment. Thank you to every Ward 11 resident who is donating their time, dollars, energy, love, creativity, and more to our immigrant and impacted families.

I am writing to share several updates about the ongoing ICE occupation in Minneapolis:

  • Our Office has launched a Ward 11 Rental Assistance fundraiser to support families impacted by ICE during this occupation. I am proud to share that we have raised over $38,000 so far, and we will begin distributing these funds asap. Please consider donating and sharing this effort with your neighbors. If you have questions about this fundraiser, or know someone in need of rental assistance, please email ward11rentalassistance@gmail.com.
  • Following the distressing events at her Town Hall in North Minneapolis, Council Member Whiting has been in touch with Congresswoman Omar and Council colleagues who were in attendance. Violence towards our elected officials is unacceptable, and he is relieved the Congresswoman is ok. Thank you to her security and MPD for their quick response.
  • The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey remain united in our demand that ICE/DHS leave Minnesota. On Monday (1/26), Mayor Frey spoke with President Trump in what he described as a productive conversation; on Tuesday, he spoke with Border Czar Homan. This has not yet produced any significant reduction in DHS presence in Minneapolisnor have we seen ICE change their tacticsOur ask of residents: please continue to peacefully protest, demand justice, and document ICE’s occupation until they leave our City. Do not let up.
  • Federal investigators continue to refuse to grant Minnesota authorities, including the BCA, access to information surrounding federal operations within the City. To ensure accountability, we need your help. If you have evidence of ICE wrongdoing in Minneapolis – including photos, video, or personal testimony -- please submit that evidence to the Minnesota Attorney General’s evidence portal. Your documentation will help us ensure those responsible for profiling, assaulting, and killing our neighbors are held to account.
  • The City Council’s February calendar has been modified to increase staff and Council Member's capacity to respond to ICEAll regular Council Committees have been condensed into longer Committee of the Whole (COW) meetings. Please consider taking this new schedule into account when planning any advocacy around upcoming votes. The schedule is as follows:
    • FIRST WEEK
      • COW = Tues., Feb. 3, 9:30 a.m.
      • COUNCIL = Thurs., Feb. 5, 9:30 a.m.
    •  SECOND WEEK
      • COW = Tues., Feb. 17, 9:30 a.m.
      • COUNCIL = Thurs., Feb. 19, 9:30 a.m.

Thank you, Ward 11. Please continue to be in touch with any needs and ideas about how we can protect our neighbors in this moment.

With love,

Jamison Whiting
