| This evening, I attended a town hall hosted by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar alongside Senator Bobby Joe Champion, Rep. Esther Agbaje, Council Member Pearll Warren, and Hennepin County Commissioner Irene Fernando. During the event, an individual deliberately sprayed a substance pink in color with a strong odor toward the front of the room, striking Congresswoman Omar, Minnesota State Senator Bobby Joe Champion, and myself.
This was an act of violence. It was frightening, intentional, and completely unacceptable.
Security responded immediately, the individual was restrained, and an arrest was made. Minneapolis Forensic Scientists responded to process the scene. I was able to return home safely and wash all residue from my skin. While I am physically okay, I want to be clear: this was a deeply unsettling experience, and I am shaken by what occurred.
At this time, the substance has not yet been identified. The uncertainty surrounding this incident only heightens the fear for those of us who were targeted and for community members who witnessed it. No one should attend a civic event fearing for their safety.
Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy. Political disagreement must never escalate into physical harm. Town halls are meant to be spaces for dialogue, not danger.
I strongly condemn this act and any attempt to threaten or silence elected officials, staff, or residents. Despite this incident, I remain committed to showing up, serving Ward 4, and standing firmly for safety, accountability, and respect in our public spaces.
I am grateful for the many messages of concern and support and will share additional information as it becomes available.
