Ward 1 News from Council President Elliott Payne

January 8, 2025

A message from Council President Elliott Payne

Hello neighbors,

My plan was to update you all this week on the new term and my re-election as President of the City Council, but ICE's attacks on our community have made that our priority. Yesterday an ICE agent named Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Good. Renee was a wife, a mother, and a resident of south Minneapolis. Anyone who kills someone in our city deserves to be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including Jonathan Ross. I immediately went to the scene yesterday when hearing the news and have been providing updates on my social media regularly. I attended the vigil for Renee last night and felt inspired by the way our community showed up.

This morning we’ve seen a number of people kidnapped throughout the Ward, including 2 legal observers taken from Lowry & Central. Senator Doron Clark and I are asking our community to patrol and get outside on our busy corridors to protect our community. Get connected to grassroots organizing groups at defend612.com

Stay safe and stay vigilant.

Elliott

“This morning an Ice agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a member of our community. Renee was a resident of our city who was out caring for her neighbors this morning and her life was taken today at the hands of the federal government. Anyone who kills someone in our city deserves to be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We are united in our support for our immigrant community and our residents in the wake of these attacks. We demand that ICE immediately leave our city so we can get rid of their chaos and violence that ended the life of one of our neighbors today.

The City Council stands committed to working with our state partners in doing everything we can to protect our neighbors in this moment.

Now is the time to reach out and support your immigrant neighbors. Minneapolis is resilient and will not back down as the federal government ramps up their attacks on our community.”
