Mayor Jacob Frey Begins Third Term in Minneapolis

Inauguration

Today, Mayor Jacob Frey was inaugurated for his third term as Mayor of Minneapolis. With Minneapolis having shown resilience through tumultuous years, Frey envisioned the next four years as an opportunity for Minneapolis to write its next chapter and build its future.

“If the motto of the last four years was resilience, then the motto of the next four must be opportunity,” Mayor Frey said. “Opportunity to build housing that welcomes everyone, to make every neighborhood safer, and to grow a city that works for all.”

With the start of his third term, Mayor Frey emphasized his commitment to unity and collaboration with his Council colleagues, not just in weathering the crisis created by the Trump administration, but in making progress on the opportunities facing Minneapolis.

Over the next four years, the Frey administration will focus on three core priorities: housing, safety, and economic opportunity—anchored by a commitment to partnership with the City Council, City staff, community leaders, and the people of Minneapolis.

Safety That Earns Trust

The mayor’s focus will be on reducing crime and making every neighborhood safer. The city will keep growing and diversifying its police force, expanding behavioral crisis response teams, and implementing durable reforms under its consent decree—while continuing to reduce violent crime and improve trust between residents and first responders.

“A city that works requires a city that is safe,” Mayor Frey said. “Every other goal—from economic development to housing—depends on both the perception and the reality of safety, and over the next four years, we will deliver both.”

Housing in Every Neighborhood

Minneapolis will continue its national leadership on housing by accelerating the construction of affordable homes across all neighborhoods. The next four years will focus on reducing concentrated poverty, expanding housing choice, and ensuring that growth reaches middle- and upper-income neighborhoods that have historically excluded new affordable housing.

“Building affordable homes in middle- and upper-income neighborhoods isn’t easy—but we will do it,” Mayor Frey said. “Because Minneapolis leads.”

A City Ready to Grow

By 2030, Minneapolis will see major investments come to life: a reinvigorated downtown, a new chapter for Uptown driven by small businesses and culture, the reconnection of Nicollet Avenue through Lake Street, redevelopment of the former Kmart site, and a transformed Upper Harbor Terminal that brings residents together along the riverfront.

“These aren’t pipe dreams,” Mayor Frey said. “We’re wide-awake, wide-eyed, and hungry for results.”

Mayor Frey closed by underscoring the importance of unity in the years ahead.

“Minneapolis is not perfect—but it is persistent,” Mayor Frey said. “When faced with uncertainty, this city doesn’t retreat. We step forward. We lock arms. And we build—together.”

The Ceremony

The inauguration ceremony was held at the historic Pantages Theatre downtown and reflected some of Minneapolis’ most unique cultural and civic traditions. The event was called to order by Tribal Secretary Sam Strong of the Red Lake Nation and featured an Honor Guard made up of the Minneapolis Police, Park Police, and Fire Departments.

The ceremony also included an artistic performance by the Somali Museum Dance Troupe, musical selections, and an original poem—“Land and Spirit: Acknowledgment of Minneapolis”—written and read by Minneapolis Poet Laureate Junauda Petrus.
