September 15, 2025 (MINNEAPOLIS) - “Today’s shooting on Lake Street where five people were injured is another painful reminder that inaction has consequences. For months, our office has been urging the City and MnDOT to take responsibility for the growing encampments and dangerous gatherings under bridges in Ward 6, especially at Hiawatha and Cedar.
Residents, drivers, and people living under the bridge are all at risk. Traffic safety, violent crime, and public health concerns cannot be ignored. We have raised these issues repeatedly, yet no clear action has been taken.
Mayor Frey’s statement today commits to contacting MnDOT and securing the Lake Street area. But our question is: why has it taken so long? We cannot wait for another tragedy before moving resources and leadership to where they are most needed.
Our office is calling for:
- Immediate coordination between the City, MnDOT, and State to address safety under bridges in Ward 6.
- Clear leadership from the Administration to move this work forward.
- Resources for people on site so that they are not simply displaced but connected to services, housing, and treatment.
We cannot continue to accept preventable violence in our community. Ward 6 deserves both safety and dignity, and we need urgent action now.”
