 Dear Neighbors,
Today is a tragic day for Minnesota. I am heartbroken to that early in the morning, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, were assassinated in her home in a targeted attack by a gunman impersonating law enforcement.
Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette were shot multiple times, and are alive. They have received medical care are now thankfully stable. Yvette, showed tremendous bravery in using her own body to protect their daughter during the attacked.
Rep. Melissa Hortman was undoubtedly a public leader who gave so much of herself in her service to the people of Minnesota. She was a fixture at the legislature, a powerful leader, and the absence of her presence will be felt for a long time. My heart and prayers are with the Hortman and Hoffman families.
Political violence is beyond devastating and reprehensible. These actions have no place in our democracy. No one should ever have to experience this.
This is an active scene and an ongoing investigation. State Patrol and other partner agencies are looking for the individual. He should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him should not approach him and should call 911 immediately.
Additionally, law enforcement is asking for the help of the public anyone with information is asked to contact the BCA tipline at bca.tips@state.mn.us or 877-996-6222.
Yours Truly,
CM Aurin Chowdhury
