Dear Neighbor,
There's lots happening in the 13th Ward!
First, thanks to those who joined the Property Valuation 101 "Lunch with Linea" and the Upton Avenue Safety Walk. The East Harriet Neighborhood officially launched their regular walks on April 1st. Their next walk is Tuesday, April 29 from 5:30-6:30 PM, beginning at Walker Place (3701 Bryant Ave. S.). For updates, follow the East Lake Harriet Neighborhood Safety Club Facebook Page or email eastharrietsafetyclub@gmail.com.
With the warmer weather, we have officially entered "Road Construction Season." The 13th Ward has its own share of projects that you can learn about below. We know these projects have impacts, whether you're a resident whose street is being worked on or someone whose daily commute has changed due to a road closure. If you have questions or issues, we are here to help!

Public Works Water Treatment and Distribution Services Division (WTDS) will be continuing the next phase of the water main cleaning and lining project that began in Linden Hills and East Harriet last summer. Water mains in the project areas are made of cast iron pipe. Although the water main is in sound condition, mineral deposits have built up on the inside of the unlined pipe. The purpose of this project is to remove the mineral deposits and install a lining to prevent future mineral build up which can limit proper water flow. This lining is certified for use in potable drinking water pipes. The costs associated with this project will not be assessed to property owners.
Public Works is currently repairing damaged sections of sanitary and storm sewer located in the vicinity of Xerxes Ave South and West 54th Street. The project will replace 94 feet of sanitary pipe, 86 feet of storm pipe, and maintenance holes. The 9-inch gravity sewer main has structural defects, leading to it taking on soil.
The new sanitary sewer will:
Prevent the need for more extensive repairs in the future.
Be installed in the same location and alignment as the existing sewer.
Enhance sanitary flow and minimize groundwater infiltration and inflow.
Estimated project completion date is mid-May 2025.
The Water Treatment and Distribution Services Division of Public Works is proactively replacing lead water service lines in the 13th Ward this summer and fall. There will be no cost to property owners for the lead lines replaced in these project areas! Project costs will be paid entirely from Federal and State grant funds. Visit the Lead Service Line Project Map to see project areas. The areas in the 13th Ward receiving replacement this year are in preparation for street work scheduled for 2026.
There are currently multiple CenterPoint Energy crews working in the East Harriet neighborhood – moving inside meters outside and connecting new or existing service lines to the gas main in the street.
CenterPoint anticipates several more weeks of service line work in East Harriet. Following the completion of all meter moves and service line connections, restoration crews will be in the area to replace temporary restoration done last fall and restore areas affected by work happening now.
At the March 27th Council Meeting, Council Member Vetaw and I recognized Stress Awareness Month and were joined by 13th Ward Resident Mariann Johnson. Mariann is a Mindfulness & Wellbeing Instructor at the Bakken Center at the University of Minnesota.
One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.
If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mailand my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
We've moved while work is being done in City Hall. Our office is in:
