50Penn

Dear Neighbor,

I wanted to provide an update on the work at 50th and Penn, because it is a critical intersection for our city, and we are broadly impacted by its operations.

Following the February 13th water main break, crews from the City’s Public Works department have been working closely with the multi-use building at 2221 W. 50th St. to assist its restoration efforts. We want to restore access to the intersection of 50th Street and Penn Ave as soon as possible and worked all last weekend to expedite progress toward that goal. Thank you all for paying attention to the “no parking” signs we have had to temporarily install on several blocks during these rapidly evolving situations. I apologize for any lack of communication.

In coordination with the building’s restoration crews, Public Works crews installed support beams and shoring towers to add stability to the building at 2221 W. 50th St.

Today some temporary streetlights were installed, and by Thursday we hope to re-open the northern half of 50th St. to two-way traffic. It will be a little tighter than normal, but it should allow vehicles to move through 50th and Penn in all directions.

As building restoration efforts continue there may be a need for short/temporary closures to help get necessary equipment in and out.

I know business owners have acutely felt the challenges and uncertainty of the past month. In my role as a Council Member, I will continue to offer whatever support I can. Last week that meant helping get debris picked up by Solid Waste and helping owners to navigate the claims process and get necessary information from the City. I remain committed to supporting the affected community members and providing you with regular updates.

We will all benefit when the intersection can be returned to normal operations, and the small businesses in this area can thrive again. Please continue to support these businesses!

Yours in service,

Linea
