Statement on Temple Israel Hate Crime

Council Member Katie Cashman

Dear Ward 7 community,

I was disturbed to learn about the vandalism that took place yesterday at Temple Israel, a sacred, important, and historic place for so many in the Ward 7 community.

During a time when dehumanizing and often violent rhetoric is rising, it’s important to remember our City’s shared values of being welcoming, inclusive, and providing safety for everyone. Let me be clear that there is no place in our city for antisemitism.

Today I hand-delivered a letter to Temple Israel leaders signed by all City Council Members and Mayor Frey to express our support. I’ve also contacted the 5th Precinct Inspector, Christie Nelson, to stress the importance of a thorough investigation, apprehending and holding the perpetrator accountable, and ensuring our community members feel safe.

In the following days, please know that I will be available for community to reach out to, continue to coordinate with community leaders and public safety officials, and share unfolding information about the City’s response through our Ward 7 communication channels.

Yours in community,

Katie Cashman
