October 26, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said a shooting at a small homeless encampment resulted in the death of one man and injured two other men.
At approximately 4:42 a.m., officers from the Third Precinct responded to a shooting near 21 St E and 15 Av S. They located three adult men who were injured by gunfire. Officers provided immediate medical aid and worked to secure the scene. All three of the injured men were transported to Hennepin Healthcare Hospital. Despite all lifesaving efforts, one of the men died at the hospital.
Homicide investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led up to the shooting which includes the possibility of three suspects who left the scene on foot. Investigators are also working to determine what connection the three injured men had with the encampment.
MPD Forensic Scientists processed the scene and collected evidence.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the name of the deceased along with the cause and manner of death.
There have been no arrests.
“Once again, tragedy has occurred at a homeless encampment and all three of the injured are known to police,” said Chief O’Hara. “Those injured today are part of the at-risk population in homeless encampments. They are suspects, witnesses, and victims of crimes. The level of crime, the drug use, and other things associated with encampments continue to create very unsafe conditions that we are working with our partners to try to address.”
The GO# for this incident is 24-308303.
