June 13, 2024 (Minneapolis): Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said today the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating a fatal Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred at approximately 9:19 pm Wednesday night in the 3400 block of Hiawatha Avenue. Chief O’Hara said there are two separate but related incidents of the same man displaying a gun that resulted in the use of deadly force by Minneapolis Police Officers.
O’Hara said the first incident occurred on the 3000 Block of 29th Av S at about 9:03 p.m. on June 12th, 2024. Residents reported a man with a handgun who appeared to be talking to himself. [GO# 24-160147]. At 9:19 p.m., approximately 16 minutes later, a second 911 call was received from the 3400 block of Hiawatha Av where a caller indicated they saw a man waving a handgun and felt threatened.
Chief O’Hara further stated that uniformed members of the Minneapolis Police Department driving fully marked squad cars responded to the 3400 block of Hiawatha Av S. Officers located the man and engaged in a foot pursuit. Officers verbally identified themselves as police officers as they ran after the man telling him to stop and that he was under arrest. There was a confrontation at the end of the foot pursuit. The man was armed with a handgun in his hand. Officers gave multiple clear commands to drop the gun and the suspect did not comply. There was a use of deadly force. The officers secured the handgun from the suspect and rendered medical aid. The handgun was jammed. The suspect was transported to Hennepin Healthcare where he was pronounced deceased.
MPD notified the BCA. The BCA responded, took control of the scene, and will conduct an independent investigation into the use of force.
Chief O’Hara further stated that, based on the information available to him, he had no reason to think that this is anything other than a justifiable and lawful use of force by police officers.
“This appears to be an individual who was armed with a handgun and acting irrationally and I’m thankful that no one else was harmed by this incident,” O’Hara said. “We await the results of the BCA’s investigation to learn more about what precipitated this incident.”
There are four officers that were involved, and preliminary information indicates that three officers were involved in the use of force.
The GO# for the OIS is 24-160156
During the BCA’s investigation into this OIS, the BCA will be the source of any further public information for this incident.
