Minneapolis Police are investigating an early morning fatal shooting at a homeless encampment.
September 18, 2024 (MINNEAPOLIS) Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced Wednesday that a double shooting at a homeless encampment left one injured and one dead. At approximately 4:40 a.m., Third Precinct Officers responded to a shooting on the 2500 block of 17th Av S. Officers located two adult men in an alley who were injured by gunfire. A man in his 30s with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds was transported to Hennepin Healthcare. The second man had a fatal gunshot wound and died at the scene.
ShotSpotter technology indicated 4 shots were fired.
Officers secured the scene and canvassed the area. MPD Forensic Scientists responded to process the scene. Investigators are working to identify a suspect and determine the sequence of events that led up to the shooting.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the deceased man’s name along with the cause and manner of death.
“There's a 20-year-old man that's dead this morning. Another man in his 30s has been injured by gunfire, and a whole community is impacted.” Said Chief O’Hara. The Chiefs made the statement at 7:00 this morning while he pointed out that kids are getting up and walking to the bus stop. “They have to deal with walking past this every day, seeing needles and everything else that goes on here. Now they're walking past crime scene tape. It's a serious, serious issue, and we're looking forward to working with everyone who possibly can do their part to help us prevent things like this. There's been way too much crime and violence this year, and way too much associated with homelessness.”
There have been no arrests.
The GO# for this incident is 24-267642.
