Dear Community,
I am writing to you with a heavy heart to share details of difficult news. Last night, September 7, Officers responded to an active shooter situation on the 4000 Block of Minnehaha Ave, there were shots fired from inside an apartment building at 4052 Minnehaha Ave, the active shooter was a resident of the building. The Minneapolis Police Department and the Sheriff’s office responded, the shooter is in custody, and he was injured. At this point, a motive has not been determined. Thankfully, no one else was injured or physically harmed. All residents of the building were fully evacuated with the assistance of Metro Transit (more details of the incident please continue to read below).
I am in continued communication with our Commissioner of the Office of Community Safety and the Chief of Police. An officer did discharge their firearm at the shooter in an effort to disarm him and due to that factor this is now classified as an officer-involved shooting and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) will be taking over the investigation. I am pushing for the investigation to be as transparent as possible in releasing findings. While the investigation takes place the perimeter of the area will be blocked off and you will see a visible presence of squad cars and investigators in the area. I am grateful to the first responders who showed up to the scene.
I like many of you are exhausted and pained by this instance of yet another senseless act of gun violence, that people in our country are far too familiar with. With the news of the school shooting that took place in Winder, Georgia at Appalachee High School, many are feeling especially raw. It breaks my heart that our community had to experience this last night and into early morning. We must make every effort from the local level, state level, and federal level to address and end gun violence in our communities.
My heart goes out to any of our community members impacted by this incident, please do reach out directly if you were impacted and there is anything my office and I can assist you with, even if you just need a listening ear: Aurin.chowdhury@minneapolismn.gov, 612-673-2212 (leave a voicemail and you will get a call back).

Early Saturday morning, at approximately 4:30 a.m., 911 callers reported hearing multiple shots near the 4000 block of Minnehaha Ave. These reports included residents of an apartment building at 4052 Minnehaha Av stating they could hear shots inside the building, knocks on their doors, and glass breaking.

The shooter is in custody at the hospital where his condition has been described as stable.
